Entrevistamos o golfer, quer dizer,
skimmer Tommy D.
1) Para começar, vamos falar um pouco de como você começou a skiar.
Tommy D: O meu irmão que me apresentou ao skimboard, ele começou vários anos antes de mim, e como todo irmão menor eu sempre seguia ele nas coisas que ele fazia. Isso foi provavelmente em 2003 ou 2004.
2) Nós soubemos que você já foi muito na Wave House em San Diego (aonde tem a onda parada). Conta para a gente um pouco sobre treinar lá e como que as coisas que você aprende lá traduzem para o skimboard.
Tommy D: Eu não tenho ido lá ultimamanete, mas, com certeza eu já passei bastante tempo por lá. A Wavehouse é um bom lugar para você aprender a surfar o tubo seja de surf ou de skimboard. O tubo está sempre mudando e lá você consegue aprender a ficar confortável mantendo um base estável dentro do tubo.
3)Nós também soubemos que você tem vários outros interesses. Golf por exemplo. Nick Sepe falou que você é o cara no Tiger Woods... Fale um pouco sobre seus outros hobbies... Como você se envolveu com golf? E como isso se mistura com skimboard.
Tommy D: É eu adoro jogar golf. Eu sou praticamente imbatível no Tiger Woods PGA Tour. (risadas) Eu adoro golf de verdade também. O golf sempre esteve perto de mim durante a minha vida, mas, não foi até o começo de 2009 que eu comecei a realmente gostar e treinar o esporte. Eu jogo bastante com o Steve Taylor, e, para vocês que ainda não sabem, o Steve é de longe o melhor golfer com que eu já joguei. Sobre golf se misturar com skimboard, na verdade, não tem muita conexão, tirando o fato que eu jogo com o Steve e a gente sempre acaba conversando sobre a Exile e skimboard.
4) Vamos falar um pouco sobre música. Você escolheu a música para a sua parte no Stimulus?! Você é realmente fã dos anos 80?
Tommy D: Eu gosto muito dos anos 80. Eu provavelmente consigo escutar qualquer música dos anos 80 e dizer quem esta tocando. As coisas não ficam muito melhor que os anos 80. A música na minha parte do Stimulus foi uma decisão minha e do Aaron Peluso, nós dois gostamos daquela música, e se encaixava bem com as imagens e com a minha personalidade.
5) Como foi ser parte do Stimulus?! Conta para gente um pouco do que aconteceu por trás das câmeras nas trips para filmar.
Tommy D: Fazer parte do Stimulus foi muito especial para mim. Realmente abriu meus olhos quando eu comecei a viajar com a galera da Exile. Aaron é realmente muito profissional e foi uma ótima experiência ser parte do filme. É muito impressionante ver o nível de skimboard que a galera do time da Exile tem, e ver ao vivo é ainda mais impressionante. Filmes ou imagens não conseguem passar a intensidade que é estar na praia vendo pessoas como o Paulo Prietto ou o Grady Archbold colocando para dentro em ondas gigantes em Solmar (Cabo). É realmente espetacular.
6)Você foi um dos primeiros skimmers a mostrar a sua opinião sobre as fotos de Sununga que sairam na Foreverskim há um ano atrás. Você postou no skimonline uma pergunta "Quem já comprou passagem para ir para lá?!", eu vou te perguntar, então, você já comprou a sua passagem?
Tommy D: (Risos) Eu gostaria de ir para Sununga, mas, no momento, eu preciso focar as minhas energias na faculdade. Eu ainda não comprei uma passagem para Sununga, mas, podem ficar tranquilo, que, no futuro, eu vou! Todas a galera que aparece nas fotos de Sununga parece estar skiando muito bem! Continuem assim!
7)Há um tempo atrás você postou várias fotos no skimonline. As fotos de Cabo durante o campeonato do ano passado foram épicas. Mas, eu não tenho visto fotos suas recentemente, o que que aconteceu?
Tommy D: Eu ainda tiro fotos as vezes. Eu parei de postar elas no skimonline para poder ajudar as revistas, como a Foreverskim. Mas, eu acho que vou começar outra POD (Picture of the Day). Então, se tudo der certo eu vou conseguir juntar fotos suficientes para manter o tópico vivo.
8)Você não participa de muitos campeonatos. Qual o motivo?
Tommy D: Eu mando muito mal em campeonatos. O nível de skimboard que rola nos campeonatos atualmente é impressionante, talvez, um pouco demais para mim. Eu participo de um evento ou outro... Mas, na maior parte do tempo eu faço free sessions mesmo. Eu me divirto mais skiando em um dia divertido em The Wedge ou com os meus amigos em Cabo do que me preocupando com campeonatos.
9) Tem mais alguma coisa que você gostaria de acrescentar?!
Tommy D: Como eu falei antes, a galera do Brasil esta skiando muito bem, continuem assim!!! Eu adoro ver fotos novas das praias e dos skimmers brasileiros. Vocês mantêm o mundo do skimboard aberto para novos picos e skimmers.

Tommy D: I was introduced to Skimboarding by my brother, he started several years before me, and like a little brother always does, I followed what he did. That was probably back in 2003 or 2004.
2) We have heard that u spent a bunch of hours at the wave house in San Diego. Tell us a bit about that. and how the skills u learn there can cross over to skimming.
Tommy D: Although I have not been down there lately, I have spent my fare share of time at the Wavehouse. The Wavehouse is good for barrel riding technique when it comes to Skimboarding or Surfing. The barrel is always changing there and it allows you to get comfortable with maintaining a stable barrel stance.
3) we also have heard that u are interested in a few other things... like golf for exemple. Nick (Sepe) told us u are the man at Tiger Woods... Talk a bit about that... How did u get into golfing? and how does that mix with skimming?
Tommy D: Yea, I do love to golf. I'm pretty much unbeatable at Tiger Woods PGA Tour hahah. As for playing real golf, I love it. I have been around it my whole life but it wasn't until the beginning of this year (2009) that I really started to get into it. I golf a lot with Steve (Taylor), and for any of you that don't already know, Steve is hands down the best golfer I have ever played with. As for Golf mixing with Skimboarding it has no actual connection besides the fact that I can go with Steve and catch up on Exile news and other Skimboarding related stuff.
4) Let's talk a bit about music... Did u pick ur own song for Stimulus? Are u really all about the 80s?!
Tommy D: I love the 80's... I can probably name any 80's song off the top of my head. It doesn't get much better then the 80's. My song for Stimulus was a combination of Aaron (Peluso) and myself, we both liked the song, and it fit in well with my footage and personality.
5) How was being part of Stimulus? Tell us a bit about the behind the scenes... the trips to film and the epic sessions in California...
Tommy D: Being a part of Stimulus was extremely special to me. It was a real eye opener when I begin to travel with the Exile Team. Aaron handles the team so professionally, its a great experience for me to be apart of that. Its crazy to see the level of Skimboarding that the guys on the team have, and to see it first hand is amazing. Movies or footage can not do justice to the actual intensity of being at the beach watching people like Paulo (Prietto) and Grady (Archbold) pull in to massive waves at Solmar. It is truly spectacular.
6)You were one of the first skimmers to show ur stoke with the shots from Sununga on the Foreverskim Cover article we had an year ago. So we are going to ask you back... "Have you bought your ticket yet?!"
Tommy D: Haha I would enjoy going to Sununga, but for right now I have to focus all my energy on school. I have not bought a plane ticket yet, but rest assured that I will in the future. Everybody I have seen pictures of Skimboarding there lately are Skimming really well. Keep it up!
7) A while ago you were posting a lot of shots on skimonline. The shots from Cabo Classico were epic!!! But we haven't seen shots by you in quite some time... What happened?
Tommy D: I still take pictures from time to time. I stopped posting pictures on the message boards so I could help out our Skimboarding Magazines like ForeverSkimMag. But I do feel like starting up the P.O.D Thread again, so hopefully I can gather up enough pictures to get it going.
8) you don't do many contests... Why is that?!
Tommy D: I skim very poorly in contest. The level of Skimboarding that is being presented in contests lately is incredible, maybe a little to much for my skill. I will do a contest here or there... But for the most part I just like to free skim. I have more fun skimming a fun day at Wedge or hanging with my friends in Cabo then worrying about contest results.
9) is there anything you would like to add?!
Tommy D: Like I said before, you guys down in Brazil have been skimming really well, keep it up!!! I love seeing new pictures of you local breaks and riders. Its always keeping the Skimboarding World open to fresh places and faces.

Entrevistamos o fotógrafo Cameron
Oden...
1) acho que não tem outro jeito de começar a não ser com a clássica "como que você começou a se envolver com skimboard"?
Cameron: Bom, eu skiei pelas primeiras vezes quando eu era pequeno em uma prancha de madeira e bodyboards que nem a maioria das crianças do sul da califórnia. Mas, quando eu tinha 13 anos, eu tinha um amigo que morava em Balboa, em Newport Beach, ele tinha uma prancha de fibra e nós íamos a praia depois da aula, a partir do momento em que eu experimentei skiar em ondas eu fiquei viciado. Então, a partir daí, eu estava na praia todo dia skiando em Balboa, eu fiz vários amigos e um deles foi o Tommy D'Eliscu. Ele me deixou bastante interessado em fotografar skimboard e andar com pessoas importantes dentro da indústria do skimboard. Isso me levou a ter minha primeira foto publicada, que acabou sendo capa da Skim Mag em 2007.
2) e como que você se envolveu com fotografia?
Cameron: Quando eu era menor eu sempre gostei de tirar fotos no evento de fámilia, mas, na verdade, não tinha realmente investido tempo até me envolver com as fotos do yearbook do colégio. Um dia, na aula, eles disseram que não tinha um fotógrafo para os eventos de esporte e perguntaram se alguém tinha uma câmera ou se interessava por fazer as fotos. Eu levantei a mão dizendo que faria, sem saber que mudaria a minha vida. Eu não fazia muita idéia do que eu estava fazendo, eu não tinha uma máquina e não sabia como usar uma. Mas, eu pensei comigo mesmo, por que não tentar. Então, eu comprei minha primeira máquina de filme e comecei a fotografar futebol, futebol americano e basquete. Eu fiquei viciado, eu estava gastando tanto dinheiro em filmes que não conseguia fazer dinheiro suficiente. Eu comecei a fazer aulas de fotografia na escola, rapidamente, eu estava fazendo tanta pesquisa online que eu perguntava coisas para a professora que ela não sabia responder. Foi aí que eu vi que eu precisava ir para outro lugar para aprender. No 11º ano (o último ano do colégio) eu comecei a estudar em casa para que eu pudesse ter mais tempo e oportunidades para trabalhar em estúdios de fotografia e fotografar esportes também. A partir daí eu só me envolvi cada vez mais.
3) Nós sabemos que você também surfa. E que você tem um quiver bem particular. Você poderia falar um pouco sobre o seu envolvimento com o surf também...
Cameron: Engraçado você perguntar isso. Eu comecei a me envolver com o surf assim que eu comecei a fotografar, era uma das minhas coisas favoritas para tirar fotos. Eu costumava fazer fotos dos meus amigos e comecei a ser reconhecido pelo meu trabalho. Isso me levou a fotografar coisas maiores, como o evento em Mavericks e o US Open de surf para a surfline.com. Na época era ótimo porque eu não surfava, então, eu não sabia o que eu estava perdendo quando eu estava fotografando aquelas ondas perfeitas. Com eu tempo eu acabei enchendo o saco de fotografar surf de competição. Eu estava de saco cheio de campeonatos e de todo o drama do surf profissional. Então, eu simplesmente parei de fotografar surf e parei de ser convidado para os eventos. Por volta dessa época eu comecei a surfar longboards. Eu me dei conta que eu poderia surfar mais vezes do que skiar durante o ano, e, que o surf profissional não é exatamente a essência do surf. Surf é se divertir pegando ondas com os seus amigos. Eu surfo várias pranchas estranhas porque eu nunca gostei muito de tri-quilhas convencionais, para mim surf é estilo e descobrir o sentimento de surfar ondas diferentes. Atualmente, eu estou mais envolvido com o lado retro do surf, olhar para o passado para me distanciar do futuro do surf, tentar fazer voltar para o lado mais divertido de antigamente.
4) Deve ser bem louco fazer uma session em The Wedge ou Aliso com os pros quando o mar esta épico... Você poderia descrever como é uma session normal para você...
Cameron: A maioria das sessions épicas começam com "A Ligação". Por volta de 6 ou 7 da manha o seu telefone começa a tocar. Você fica na cama considerando se vale a pena ou não ficar em pé na praia, no frio ou na sua cama quentinha. (risadas)
Mas, você acaba indo para a praia, e quando você chegar lá, só de olhar você consegue ver que vai ser uma session épica e você provavelmente vai ficar lá o dia todo, e tudo vale a pena para fazer A foto. É realmente divertido ver o pros motivando uns aos outros para ir cada vez mais longe, pegar uma onda cada vez maior e melhor. Eu gosto de colocar o meu iPod e imaginar que eu estou assistindo um filme de skimboard através da lente da máquina, faz o tempo passar mais rápido. Depois de uma boa session, a galera costuma se encontrar para comer alguma coisa antes de ir para casa. Eles vão dormir e eu fico acordado escolhendo e editando as fotos, mas, tudo vale a pena quando você consegue fazer uma foto épica.
5) Qual equipamento você esta usando no momento?! tem alguma coisa na sua lista de compras?
Cameron: No momento eu estou usando uma Canon 1D Mark II. Para skim eu uso uma Canon 70-200mm f2.8 ou uma Canon 500mm f4 para The Wedge.
Mas eu também tiro umas fotos em médio formato e uso algumas máquinas estranhas.
6)Você tirar fotos incríveis de várias coisas diferentes. Fotografia é o seu emprego principal?
Cameron: É! Eu faço algumas coisas freelance para estúdios e diversas empresas. Nunca tem um momento chato, tem sempre algo novo para aprender.
7)Aquela foto do Brent Gretch que foi capa da Skimboarder talvez seja a melhor foto de skimboard que eu já vi. Fale um pouco sobre aquela session, achar aquele ângulo, a luz...
Cameron: Obrigado. Aquele dia foi inacreditável. Estavam rolando uns problemas com queimadas na Califórnia e isso criou uma fuligem no céu que deixou o céu completamente vermelho, estava ventando terral e tinha um swell de sul perfeito que deixou o dia épico. Eu tirei duas das minhas melhores fotos nesse dia e várias fotos boas.
8)Tem alguma coisa que você gostaria de acrescentar?
Cameron: Eu gostaria de agradecer a todos que me incentivaram com fotografia e todo mundo da indústria do skimboard que me ajudou a chegar aonde estou hoje.
Faça o que você ama e você nunca vai trabalhar um dia da sua vida...

1) i guess we need to start with the classic... How did u get involved in Skimboarding?
Well, i tried skimboarding when I was little on wooden skimboards and boogie boards just like most so cal kids. But when i was around 13 i had a friend that lived on the beach in balboa (newport beach), he had a fiberglass skimboard that we took out to the beach after school and messed around on, and from the moment I tried "real" with waves I was hooked. so from then on i was at the beach every day skimboarding up and down balboa, so I made lots of friends and one of them happened to be Tommy D'eliscu. He really got me hooked on to shooting skimboarding and hanging around with key people in the industry. That led to me getting my first skimboarding shot published, which happened to be the cover of Skim Mag in 2007.
2) and how did u get into photography??
When I was young I always liked to take our family photos but really never thought anything of it until i got sucked into taking yearbook class freshman year of high school. One day in class they told us they didn't have a sports photographer and asked if anyone had a camera or could shoot photos. I raised my hand and said I would do it not knowing that would change my life. I really had no idea what i was doing, I didn't have a camera, and I didn't know how to use a camera. But i figured why not give it a shot. So I got my first film camera and started shooting. (soccer, football and basketball) I was hooked, I was spending so much money on rolls of film I couldn't keep up. I started taking photography classes at school and was soon doing so much online research about photography the teacher had no idea what i was talking about when I would ask her questions. That's when I knew I had to go somewhere else to learn. So I started doing my school work at home in 11th grade so i could have more opportunities to work in photography studios wile still shooting sports on the side. the rest is down hill from there.
3) we also know you surf... You have some pretty particular quiver actually... could you talk a little about it ur involvement with surfing as well...
Its funny you ask that. I got involved in surfing right when i started photograph, it was one of my favorite things to shoot. I use to take photos of my friends on the surf team in my spare time and started getting noticed for my work. That led me to shoot some big things like the mavericks big wave contest and the US open of surfing for surfline.com. At the time it was great I didn't surf so I didn't know what I was missing when I was shooting all those good waves. So as time went on I kind of got over shooting that side of surfing, I was just over contests and the drama of pro surfing. So I just stopped shooting it, I got burnt out. Around that time is when I started longboarding. I realized that I could surf a lot more than I could skim during the year, and that pro surfing isn't what "surfing" is about. Its about having fun sharing waves with your friends. I ride a lot of weird boards just because I've never liked thrusters or any of the normal tri fin setups, its about style for me and seeing how many different type of feels you can get on a wave. Now I am more involved in the retro side of surfing looking to the past to further the future of surfing, bringing it back to what it use to be.
4)it must be pretty insane to have a photo session at the wedge or aliso on fire with all the pros... Could you describe ur tipical photo session?
Most epic sessions start with "the call". Around 6am to 7am your phone starts ringing. You try to weed out if its worth you getting out of bed to go stand on a cold beach or to stay in your nice warm bed hahaha.
So you get to the beach and pretty much by the first look you can tell what its going to be like, if its an epic session you could be there all day, but its worth it to get the shot. its really fun to watch all the pros push each other to go bigger and get the best wave. I like to put my ipod in and picture that i'm watching a skim movie through my lens, it makes the time go by faster. after a good day most of the time a group meets up and gets some food and hang out for a bit before we go home to get ready for the next day. They get to sleep wile I stay up sorting and editing photos, but its all well worth it when you get an epic shot.
5)What equipament are u using at the moment?! and what's on ur wishlist?
Right now I shoot with a canon 1D mark II for my body.
then for skim I either shoot a canon 70-200mm f2.8 or a canon 500mm f4 for wedge.
but I also shoot a lot of medium format film and random weird cameras.
6)You take super sick photos of a lot of different subjects... Is photography ur full time job?
Yeah photography is my full time job. I shoot freelance for a couple product studios and a lot of random companies.
There is never a dull moment, there's always something new for me to learn.
7)that shot of brent gretch that made the skimboarder cover might be one of the best skim shots ever!! talk us through that session... finding that angle and that sick light...
Thanks! That day was strait up unreal. There were fires all over california creating ash that turned the sky red, and there was crazy offshore wind and perfect south swell just made it a legendary day.
I got two of my best skim shots that day along with a load of other good shots.
8)is there anything u would like to add?
I would just like to thank everyone who has pushed me in my photography, and everyone in the skimboarding industry that has helped me get to where i am today.

1) acho que não tem outro jeito de começar a não ser com a clássica "como que você começou a se envolver com skimboard"?
Cameron: Bom, eu skiei pelas primeiras vezes quando eu era pequeno em uma prancha de madeira e bodyboards que nem a maioria das crianças do sul da califórnia. Mas, quando eu tinha 13 anos, eu tinha um amigo que morava em Balboa, em Newport Beach, ele tinha uma prancha de fibra e nós íamos a praia depois da aula, a partir do momento em que eu experimentei skiar em ondas eu fiquei viciado. Então, a partir daí, eu estava na praia todo dia skiando em Balboa, eu fiz vários amigos e um deles foi o Tommy D'Eliscu. Ele me deixou bastante interessado em fotografar skimboard e andar com pessoas importantes dentro da indústria do skimboard. Isso me levou a ter minha primeira foto publicada, que acabou sendo capa da Skim Mag em 2007.
2) e como que você se envolveu com fotografia?
Cameron: Quando eu era menor eu sempre gostei de tirar fotos no evento de fámilia, mas, na verdade, não tinha realmente investido tempo até me envolver com as fotos do yearbook do colégio. Um dia, na aula, eles disseram que não tinha um fotógrafo para os eventos de esporte e perguntaram se alguém tinha uma câmera ou se interessava por fazer as fotos. Eu levantei a mão dizendo que faria, sem saber que mudaria a minha vida. Eu não fazia muita idéia do que eu estava fazendo, eu não tinha uma máquina e não sabia como usar uma. Mas, eu pensei comigo mesmo, por que não tentar. Então, eu comprei minha primeira máquina de filme e comecei a fotografar futebol, futebol americano e basquete. Eu fiquei viciado, eu estava gastando tanto dinheiro em filmes que não conseguia fazer dinheiro suficiente. Eu comecei a fazer aulas de fotografia na escola, rapidamente, eu estava fazendo tanta pesquisa online que eu perguntava coisas para a professora que ela não sabia responder. Foi aí que eu vi que eu precisava ir para outro lugar para aprender. No 11º ano (o último ano do colégio) eu comecei a estudar em casa para que eu pudesse ter mais tempo e oportunidades para trabalhar em estúdios de fotografia e fotografar esportes também. A partir daí eu só me envolvi cada vez mais.
3) Nós sabemos que você também surfa. E que você tem um quiver bem particular. Você poderia falar um pouco sobre o seu envolvimento com o surf também...
Cameron: Engraçado você perguntar isso. Eu comecei a me envolver com o surf assim que eu comecei a fotografar, era uma das minhas coisas favoritas para tirar fotos. Eu costumava fazer fotos dos meus amigos e comecei a ser reconhecido pelo meu trabalho. Isso me levou a fotografar coisas maiores, como o evento em Mavericks e o US Open de surf para a surfline.com. Na época era ótimo porque eu não surfava, então, eu não sabia o que eu estava perdendo quando eu estava fotografando aquelas ondas perfeitas. Com eu tempo eu acabei enchendo o saco de fotografar surf de competição. Eu estava de saco cheio de campeonatos e de todo o drama do surf profissional. Então, eu simplesmente parei de fotografar surf e parei de ser convidado para os eventos. Por volta dessa época eu comecei a surfar longboards. Eu me dei conta que eu poderia surfar mais vezes do que skiar durante o ano, e, que o surf profissional não é exatamente a essência do surf. Surf é se divertir pegando ondas com os seus amigos. Eu surfo várias pranchas estranhas porque eu nunca gostei muito de tri-quilhas convencionais, para mim surf é estilo e descobrir o sentimento de surfar ondas diferentes. Atualmente, eu estou mais envolvido com o lado retro do surf, olhar para o passado para me distanciar do futuro do surf, tentar fazer voltar para o lado mais divertido de antigamente.
4) Deve ser bem louco fazer uma session em The Wedge ou Aliso com os pros quando o mar esta épico... Você poderia descrever como é uma session normal para você...
Cameron: A maioria das sessions épicas começam com "A Ligação". Por volta de 6 ou 7 da manha o seu telefone começa a tocar. Você fica na cama considerando se vale a pena ou não ficar em pé na praia, no frio ou na sua cama quentinha. (risadas)
Mas, você acaba indo para a praia, e quando você chegar lá, só de olhar você consegue ver que vai ser uma session épica e você provavelmente vai ficar lá o dia todo, e tudo vale a pena para fazer A foto. É realmente divertido ver o pros motivando uns aos outros para ir cada vez mais longe, pegar uma onda cada vez maior e melhor. Eu gosto de colocar o meu iPod e imaginar que eu estou assistindo um filme de skimboard através da lente da máquina, faz o tempo passar mais rápido. Depois de uma boa session, a galera costuma se encontrar para comer alguma coisa antes de ir para casa. Eles vão dormir e eu fico acordado escolhendo e editando as fotos, mas, tudo vale a pena quando você consegue fazer uma foto épica.
5) Qual equipamento você esta usando no momento?! tem alguma coisa na sua lista de compras?
Cameron: No momento eu estou usando uma Canon 1D Mark II. Para skim eu uso uma Canon 70-200mm f2.8 ou uma Canon 500mm f4 para The Wedge.
Mas eu também tiro umas fotos em médio formato e uso algumas máquinas estranhas.
6)Você tirar fotos incríveis de várias coisas diferentes. Fotografia é o seu emprego principal?
Cameron: É! Eu faço algumas coisas freelance para estúdios e diversas empresas. Nunca tem um momento chato, tem sempre algo novo para aprender.
7)Aquela foto do Brent Gretch que foi capa da Skimboarder talvez seja a melhor foto de skimboard que eu já vi. Fale um pouco sobre aquela session, achar aquele ângulo, a luz...
Cameron: Obrigado. Aquele dia foi inacreditável. Estavam rolando uns problemas com queimadas na Califórnia e isso criou uma fuligem no céu que deixou o céu completamente vermelho, estava ventando terral e tinha um swell de sul perfeito que deixou o dia épico. Eu tirei duas das minhas melhores fotos nesse dia e várias fotos boas.
8)Tem alguma coisa que você gostaria de acrescentar?
Cameron: Eu gostaria de agradecer a todos que me incentivaram com fotografia e todo mundo da indústria do skimboard que me ajudou a chegar aonde estou hoje.

1) i guess we need to start with the classic... How did u get involved in Skimboarding?
Well, i tried skimboarding when I was little on wooden skimboards and boogie boards just like most so cal kids. But when i was around 13 i had a friend that lived on the beach in balboa (newport beach), he had a fiberglass skimboard that we took out to the beach after school and messed around on, and from the moment I tried "real" with waves I was hooked. so from then on i was at the beach every day skimboarding up and down balboa, so I made lots of friends and one of them happened to be Tommy D'eliscu. He really got me hooked on to shooting skimboarding and hanging around with key people in the industry. That led to me getting my first skimboarding shot published, which happened to be the cover of Skim Mag in 2007.
2) and how did u get into photography??
When I was young I always liked to take our family photos but really never thought anything of it until i got sucked into taking yearbook class freshman year of high school. One day in class they told us they didn't have a sports photographer and asked if anyone had a camera or could shoot photos. I raised my hand and said I would do it not knowing that would change my life. I really had no idea what i was doing, I didn't have a camera, and I didn't know how to use a camera. But i figured why not give it a shot. So I got my first film camera and started shooting. (soccer, football and basketball) I was hooked, I was spending so much money on rolls of film I couldn't keep up. Nós ouvimos falar do Nick pela
primeira vez em 2006, na Foreverskim. Rolou uma matéria sobre skimmers novos
que estavam chamando a atenção, Nick estava entre eles...
Para começar conta para a gente um pouco sobre o seu envolvimento com o skimboard. Como que foi crescer perto de Laguna, morar em Dana Point com o Woody e a galera de NC e o mais importante... estudar na mesma escola que o Steve Taylor!
Nick Sepe: Eu acho que eu não tenho nenhum envolvimento real com skimboard. Hoje em dia eu skio quando eu tenho tempo. (risadas) Mas, eu cresci no sul de Orange County em uma cidade pequena que é há uma meia hora de Laguna, então, quando eu era menor eu sempre tentava arrumar uma carona para lá. Eventualmente eu acabei conhecendo o Steve Taylor, quando era pequeno ele sempre fazia algo idiota comigo e com os meus amigos, como me arrastar pelado pela minha toalha pela praia. (risadas) Depois disso, através dele eu acabei conhecendo o Woody e o Cheyne quando eles viam para Laguna para os campeonatos. Alguns anos depois disso, eu acabei morando em uma casa com o Woody, e dois outros caras, Mikal e Josh que também eram da Carolina do Norte e, com certeza, foi um época bem divertida. A gente sempre tinha uma galera visitando e dormindo na nossa casa durante os campeonatos e era uma galera interessante. Eu lembro de uma vez que eu cheguei em casa tarde da faculdade e o Derek estava filmando o Woody e o Steve com um boom enorme de uns 5 metros. O treco era enorme, ocupava a cozinha inteira e metade da sala, com certeza, foi uma imagem única, e, bem engraçado também. A casa era realmente bem divertida para se viver, tinha sempre algo diferente acontecendo e a galera era bastante animada e sabia se divertir. (risadas)
Agora, vamos falar um pouco sobre o Brasil... Porque você resolveu vir para o Brasil? Que imagem que você tinha do lugar antes de vir?
Nick: Eu resolvi ir para o Brasil por causa de Sununga! (risadas) Não, sério agora, eu falei com o Adam Hayward durante a primavera e falei que eu gostaria de fazer uma trip para algum lugar durante o verão e ele me falou que estava indo para o Brasil, para ver qual era de Sununga, então eu vi que o Brasil parecia um lugar divertido e aquelas fotos de Sununga realmente me chamaram a atenção. Eu acabei de enrolando com a viagem porque demorou bastante para eu conseguir o visto, então, eu só acabei encontrando o Adam durante um ou dois dias, isso foi meio caido, mas, o Adam, com certeza, tinha umas boas histórias para contar. Eu realmente não sabia o que esperar do Brasil, eu apenas fui com a esperança de pegar umas ondas para surfar e skiar, conhecer uma galera manera e a trip acabou sendo muito boa. Eu descobri que o Brasil é um lugar muito impressionante, tem tanta coisa acontecendo, a paisagem é linda, as pessoas dirigem que nem doidas, as ondas são muito boas, a comida é sempre fresca e saborosa, e as mulheres são muito "gorbachav" (insider: essa foi a palavra que o Nick falou tentando se referir a "gostosa"). Ipanema é uma praia bem legal também. Eu sinto falta de poder andar até a praia para uma session de surf e depois, a noite, ir para a loja de sucos, as 4 da manha e terminar a noite com um açaí e um pastel de galinha (risadas). Eu adorei aquelas coisas!
Os primeiros dias que você passou aqui foram um pouco tumultuados. A gente foi para umas festa, teve o campeonato na Macumba, você teve que ser juiz... Quais foram as suas primeiras impressões?!
Se eu me lembro bem o campeonato foi adiado para o dia seguinte por causa da chuva. Então, quando a gente chegou no campeonato no segundo dia, eu estava um pouco preocupado que o tempo ainda estivesse ruim para skiar, mas, na verdade, o campeonato já estava rolando e as condições não estavam das piores. Julgar foi bem interessante. Como eu não falo nada de português, no final de cada bateria, eu e Robertinho tinhamos que olhar as folhas um do outro e fazer algum tipo de sinal. Os skimmers, com certeza, mandam bem por aí, e foi uma experiência muito legal fazer parte do evento. Todos os skimmers e pais envolvidos pareciam estar gostando de estar participando, então, no final, foi um dia divertido.
Fale um pouco sobre o que você achou da cena do skimboard aqui no Brasil, o nível da galera e essas coisas...
Nick: Eu vejo um bom futuro para o skimboard no Brasil, com certeza. Tem vários skimmers jovens que já mandam muito bem e que só tendem a melhorar quando ficarem mais velhos. E ainda por cima, parece que a Red Bull esta interessada em fazer parte da cena. Então, eu vejo o potencial para alguns campeonatos bem organizados no futuro. Eu fiquei impressionado com o que eu vi!
O que que você achou da creche? Eles são malas ou muito malas?! (risadas) Não, vai, agora, sério... O que você achou no nível deles?
Nick: Nooooooossa!! Eles são mala! (risos) Não, sério, a creche é muito sinistra. Eles são até bem maduros para a idade deles e parece que eles estão sempre empolgado com tudo! Eles skiavam todo dia, até mesmo quando estava chovendo. Eu lembro a primeira vez que eu vi o Hantaro, estava chovendo e nós (Nick e André Magarão) estavamos comendo na loja de sucos, eu vejo alguém saindo do ônibus só de bermuda e com a prancha de skim, obviamente era o Hantaro empolgadão para ir skiar. (risadas) Eles todos mandam muito bem. Foi muito bom skiar com eles. Eles estão sempre amarradões de tentar coisas novas e quando eles acertam alguma coisa legal, você consegue ver que eles estão muito empolgados com o esporte. Os lugares que eles skiam são bem legais também. Vidigal e o "short steps" (como a creche se refere a lateral do vidigal porque não tem muito espaço para corer) é um lugar irado para ficar de bobeira e para skiar, me lembrou um pouco de West St.
Para terminar... Como foi a sua trip para Sununga com o Hantaro e o Matheus? Fale um pouco sobre a onda e a galera que skia por lá...
Nick: A trip foi muito divertida. Eu acabei vendo o melhor programa de tv do mundo chamado Panico, eu acho! (risos) Mas, a gente acabou pegando ondas divertidas em Sununga. Hantaro e Matheus estavam pegando altas junto com o Leandro, o Renato e alguns outros locais. Eu ainda não vi as imagens do Adam Hayward, mas eu já soube que ele tem boas imagens, não posso esperar para ver. Sununga é um lugar muito bonito e me amarrei em estar lá mesmo skiando muito mal. (risos). De uma forma geral, toda a minha trip para o Brasil foi muito boa. Obrigado André e a creche. Tenho um monte de boas lembranças, novas gírias e um gosto por comida brasileira. Ah, e uma última coisa... NONNNNAAAA!!!!

first, tell us a bit about ur involvement with skimboarding?! how was growing up in San Diego, living in Dana Point with Woody and all those guys and most importantly going to high school with steve taylor?
I don't think I have any real involvement with skimboarding really, I just skim when I have the time nowadays haha. But I grew up in South Orange County in a little city that's about 30 minutes away from Laguna beach so when I was younger I would always try to catch a ride down there whenever I could. Eventually I met Steve Taylor when I was a little grom and he would always pull some stupid shit on me and my friends like drag me down half the beach in my towel naked haha. Then through him I met Woody and Cheyne when they would stay at his place for the contests out here. A few years after that I got a house with Woody, and these two cool kids Mikal and Josh who were all from North Carolina and that was definitely a good little time. We always had people staying with us for contests or that were just visiting the Laguna area so it was always interesting and fun. I remember one time I came back from school late at night to discover Derek filming a game of quarters between Woody and Steve with this huge 15 ft or so camera boom. This thing was huge and was taking up our whole kitchen and about half of our living room, it was definitely a sight to walk in on but hilarious at the same time. That house was definitely a blast to live in though, there was always something random going on and those guys definitely know how to keep things interesting haha.
now, let's talk about brazil a bit... Why did u decide to come to brazil?! what image did u have of the place before you got here?!
I decided to come to Brazil because of Sunungaaa! Haha no seriously though, I talked to Adam Hayward around spring time and told him I was going to go on a trip somewhere during the summer and he told me he was heading down to Brazil to check out Sununga so I figured Brazil sounds fun and those pics of Sununga definitely caught my attention. My travel times got all messed up though because my Visa for Brazil took so long to get, so I only saw him for one or two days before he left, that was kind of a bummer but he definitely had a few stories. I didn't really know what to expect in Brazil either, I just went down there hoping to get some waves for surf and skim and meet some cool people and it turned out to be a great trip. I discovered that Brazil is an amazing place, there's so much going on everywhere, the landscape is beautiful, people drive like maniacs, the waves are great, the food is fresh and tasty, and the woman are soo gorbachav(hot) haha. Ipanema is a really cool beach city too. I miss being able to walk to the beach for a little surf session then later that night head to the juice place at 4 am to end the night with a fresh acai and um pastel de galinha haha, I love those things.
the first couple of days you were here was pretty hectic... we had a contest at Macumba Beach and you had to be one of the judges... what were your first impressions?!
I think the contest got pushed back a day because of the weather if I remember correctly, so when I showed up to the contest on the next day I was a little worried that the weather might still be a little hectic to skim in but when we showed up the contest was already up and running and the conditions weren't too bad actually. Judging was pretty interesting too since I know next to no portuguese haha, so me and Robertinho would just look at each other's score sheets and give a thumbs up after the heats. The riders definitely have some skill down there, and it was a great experience to be a part of. All the kids and parents down there were so stoked to be a part of that contest so it made it really fun all day.
tell us a bit of ur thoughts about skimboarding in brazil, the level of skimboarding you saw while you were here and all that stuff...
I see a good future for skimboarding in Brazil that's for sure. There are so many young kids that kill it already and there only going to get better as they get older. On top of that it seems like Red Bull is down to be a part of skimboarding, so I see some potential for some big contests down there in the years to come, I was definitely impressed with it all.
what did u think of the kids?! how annoying and bitchy are they?! haha now, in a more serious note, what do think about their level?
Damnnn they're bitchhyy. Haha no seriously, the kids are badass. They're pretty mature for their age and there always stoked about everything it seems like. Everyday they'd go skim, even when it was storming out. I remember the first time i met Hantaro it was raining and me and you were at the juice bar and we see this kid in boardshorts get off the bus with a skimboard, sure enough it's Hantaro stoked to skim haha. They all have good skills though, it was fun to skim with them because they love to try new stuff whenever they skim and when they pull of some dope tricks you can see the stoke on there face. The spots they skim are really fun too actually, Vidgigal or "short steps" was a sick spot to hang out at and the skim reminded me a little of West st.
to finish it off... how was ur trip to Sununga with Hantaro and Matheus? tell us a bit of how the waves were and about how well the local kids ride that thing!
The trip was reallll fun. I learned about the best show in the world called Panico I think haha. But we actually caught Sununga pretty fun. Hantaro and Matheus we're killing it and Leandro, Renato, and all the other locals were pulling into some pretty sick barrels. I haven't seen Hayward's footage of the place yet but from what I hear he got some quality shots so I can't wait to see it. Sununga is a beautiful spot though, and I loved every minute I was down there even though I was poop skimming haha. Overall my whole time in Brazil was awesome thanks to you and the kids man, a ton of good memories, new slang words, and a taste for some awesome Brazilian food. Oh ya one last thing. NONNNAAA!!!
Para começar conta para a gente um pouco sobre o seu envolvimento com o skimboard. Como que foi crescer perto de Laguna, morar em Dana Point com o Woody e a galera de NC e o mais importante... estudar na mesma escola que o Steve Taylor!
Nick Sepe: Eu acho que eu não tenho nenhum envolvimento real com skimboard. Hoje em dia eu skio quando eu tenho tempo. (risadas) Mas, eu cresci no sul de Orange County em uma cidade pequena que é há uma meia hora de Laguna, então, quando eu era menor eu sempre tentava arrumar uma carona para lá. Eventualmente eu acabei conhecendo o Steve Taylor, quando era pequeno ele sempre fazia algo idiota comigo e com os meus amigos, como me arrastar pelado pela minha toalha pela praia. (risadas) Depois disso, através dele eu acabei conhecendo o Woody e o Cheyne quando eles viam para Laguna para os campeonatos. Alguns anos depois disso, eu acabei morando em uma casa com o Woody, e dois outros caras, Mikal e Josh que também eram da Carolina do Norte e, com certeza, foi um época bem divertida. A gente sempre tinha uma galera visitando e dormindo na nossa casa durante os campeonatos e era uma galera interessante. Eu lembro de uma vez que eu cheguei em casa tarde da faculdade e o Derek estava filmando o Woody e o Steve com um boom enorme de uns 5 metros. O treco era enorme, ocupava a cozinha inteira e metade da sala, com certeza, foi uma imagem única, e, bem engraçado também. A casa era realmente bem divertida para se viver, tinha sempre algo diferente acontecendo e a galera era bastante animada e sabia se divertir. (risadas)
Agora, vamos falar um pouco sobre o Brasil... Porque você resolveu vir para o Brasil? Que imagem que você tinha do lugar antes de vir?
Nick: Eu resolvi ir para o Brasil por causa de Sununga! (risadas) Não, sério agora, eu falei com o Adam Hayward durante a primavera e falei que eu gostaria de fazer uma trip para algum lugar durante o verão e ele me falou que estava indo para o Brasil, para ver qual era de Sununga, então eu vi que o Brasil parecia um lugar divertido e aquelas fotos de Sununga realmente me chamaram a atenção. Eu acabei de enrolando com a viagem porque demorou bastante para eu conseguir o visto, então, eu só acabei encontrando o Adam durante um ou dois dias, isso foi meio caido, mas, o Adam, com certeza, tinha umas boas histórias para contar. Eu realmente não sabia o que esperar do Brasil, eu apenas fui com a esperança de pegar umas ondas para surfar e skiar, conhecer uma galera manera e a trip acabou sendo muito boa. Eu descobri que o Brasil é um lugar muito impressionante, tem tanta coisa acontecendo, a paisagem é linda, as pessoas dirigem que nem doidas, as ondas são muito boas, a comida é sempre fresca e saborosa, e as mulheres são muito "gorbachav" (insider: essa foi a palavra que o Nick falou tentando se referir a "gostosa"). Ipanema é uma praia bem legal também. Eu sinto falta de poder andar até a praia para uma session de surf e depois, a noite, ir para a loja de sucos, as 4 da manha e terminar a noite com um açaí e um pastel de galinha (risadas). Eu adorei aquelas coisas!
Os primeiros dias que você passou aqui foram um pouco tumultuados. A gente foi para umas festa, teve o campeonato na Macumba, você teve que ser juiz... Quais foram as suas primeiras impressões?!
Se eu me lembro bem o campeonato foi adiado para o dia seguinte por causa da chuva. Então, quando a gente chegou no campeonato no segundo dia, eu estava um pouco preocupado que o tempo ainda estivesse ruim para skiar, mas, na verdade, o campeonato já estava rolando e as condições não estavam das piores. Julgar foi bem interessante. Como eu não falo nada de português, no final de cada bateria, eu e Robertinho tinhamos que olhar as folhas um do outro e fazer algum tipo de sinal. Os skimmers, com certeza, mandam bem por aí, e foi uma experiência muito legal fazer parte do evento. Todos os skimmers e pais envolvidos pareciam estar gostando de estar participando, então, no final, foi um dia divertido.
Fale um pouco sobre o que você achou da cena do skimboard aqui no Brasil, o nível da galera e essas coisas...
Nick: Eu vejo um bom futuro para o skimboard no Brasil, com certeza. Tem vários skimmers jovens que já mandam muito bem e que só tendem a melhorar quando ficarem mais velhos. E ainda por cima, parece que a Red Bull esta interessada em fazer parte da cena. Então, eu vejo o potencial para alguns campeonatos bem organizados no futuro. Eu fiquei impressionado com o que eu vi!
O que que você achou da creche? Eles são malas ou muito malas?! (risadas) Não, vai, agora, sério... O que você achou no nível deles?
Nick: Nooooooossa!! Eles são mala! (risos) Não, sério, a creche é muito sinistra. Eles são até bem maduros para a idade deles e parece que eles estão sempre empolgado com tudo! Eles skiavam todo dia, até mesmo quando estava chovendo. Eu lembro a primeira vez que eu vi o Hantaro, estava chovendo e nós (Nick e André Magarão) estavamos comendo na loja de sucos, eu vejo alguém saindo do ônibus só de bermuda e com a prancha de skim, obviamente era o Hantaro empolgadão para ir skiar. (risadas) Eles todos mandam muito bem. Foi muito bom skiar com eles. Eles estão sempre amarradões de tentar coisas novas e quando eles acertam alguma coisa legal, você consegue ver que eles estão muito empolgados com o esporte. Os lugares que eles skiam são bem legais também. Vidigal e o "short steps" (como a creche se refere a lateral do vidigal porque não tem muito espaço para corer) é um lugar irado para ficar de bobeira e para skiar, me lembrou um pouco de West St.
Para terminar... Como foi a sua trip para Sununga com o Hantaro e o Matheus? Fale um pouco sobre a onda e a galera que skia por lá...
Nick: A trip foi muito divertida. Eu acabei vendo o melhor programa de tv do mundo chamado Panico, eu acho! (risos) Mas, a gente acabou pegando ondas divertidas em Sununga. Hantaro e Matheus estavam pegando altas junto com o Leandro, o Renato e alguns outros locais. Eu ainda não vi as imagens do Adam Hayward, mas eu já soube que ele tem boas imagens, não posso esperar para ver. Sununga é um lugar muito bonito e me amarrei em estar lá mesmo skiando muito mal. (risos). De uma forma geral, toda a minha trip para o Brasil foi muito boa. Obrigado André e a creche. Tenho um monte de boas lembranças, novas gírias e um gosto por comida brasileira. first, tell us a bit about ur involvement with skimboarding?! how was growing up in San Diego, living in Dana Point with Woody and all those guys and most importantly going to high school with steve taylor?
I don't think I have any real involvement with skimboarding really, I just skim when I have the time nowadays haha. But I grew up in South Orange County in a little city that's about 30 minutes away from Laguna beach so when I was younger I would always try to catch a ride down there whenever I could. Eventually I met Steve Taylor when I was a little grom and he would always pull some stupid shit on me and my friends like drag me down half the beach in my towel naked haha. Then through him I met Woody and Cheyne when they would stay at his place for the contests out here. A few years after that I got a house with Woody, and these two cool kids Mikal and Josh who were all from North Carolina and that was definitely a good little time. We always had people staying with us for contests or that were just visiting the Laguna area so it was always interesting and fun. I remember one time I came back from school late at night to discover Derek filming a game of quarters between Woody and Steve with this huge 15 ft or so camera boom. This thing was huge and was taking up our whole kitchen and about half of our living room, it was definitely a sight to walk in on but hilarious at the same time. That house was definitely a blast to live in though, there was always something random going on and those guys definitely know how to keep things interesting haha.
now, let's talk about brazil a bit... Why did u decide to come to brazil?! what image did u have of the place before you got here?!
I decided to come to Brazil because of Sunungaaa! Haha no seriously though, I talked to Adam Hayward around spring time and told him I was going to go on a trip somewhere during the summer and he told me he was heading down to Brazil to check out Sununga so I figured Brazil sounds fun and those pics of Sununga definitely caught my attention. My travel times got all messed up though because my Visa for Brazil took so long to get, so I only saw him for one or two days before he left, that was kind of a bummer but he definitely had a few stories. I didn't really know what to expect in Brazil either, I just went down there hoping to get some waves for surf and skim and meet some cool people and it turned out to be a great trip. I discovered that Brazil is an amazing place, there's so much going on everywhere, the landscape is beautiful, people drive like maniacs, the waves are great, the food is fresh and tasty, and the woman are soo gorbachav(hot) haha. Ipanema is a really cool beach city too. I miss being able to walk to the beach for a little surf session then later that night head to the juice place at 4 am to end the night with a fresh acai and um pastel de galinha haha, I love those things.
the first couple of days you were here was pretty hectic... we had a contest at Macumba Beach and you had to be one of the judges... what were your first impressions?!
I think the contest got pushed back a day because of the weather if I remember correctly, so when I showed up to the contest on the next day I was a little worried that the weather might still be a little hectic to skim in but when we showed up the contest was already up and running and the conditions weren't too bad actually. Judging was pretty interesting too since I know next to no portuguese haha, so me and Robertinho would just look at each other's score sheets and give a thumbs up after the heats. The riders definitely have some skill down there, and it was a great experience to be a part of. All the kids and parents down there were so stoked to be a part of that contest so it made it really fun all day.
tell us a bit of ur thoughts about skimboarding in brazil, the level of skimboarding you saw while you were here and all that stuff...
I see a good future for skimboarding in Brazil that's for sure. There are so many young kids that kill it already and there only going to get better as they get older. On top of that it seems like Red Bull is down to be a part of skimboarding, so I see some potential for some big contests down there in the years to come, I was definitely impressed with it all.
what did u think of the kids?! how annoying and bitchy are they?! haha now, in a more serious note, what do think about their level?
Damnnn they're bitchhyy. Haha no seriously, the kids are badass. They're pretty mature for their age and there always stoked about everything it seems like. Everyday they'd go skim, even when it was storming out. I remember the first time i met Hantaro it was raining and me and you were at the juice bar and we see this kid in boardshorts get off the bus with a skimboard, sure enough it's Hantaro stoked to skim haha. They all have good skills though, it was fun to skim with them because they love to try new stuff whenever they skim and when they pull of some dope tricks you can see the stoke on there face. The spots they skim are really fun too actually, Vidgigal or "short steps" was a sick spot to hang out at and the skim reminded me a little of West st.
to finish it off... how was ur trip to Sununga with Hantaro and Matheus? tell us a bit of how the waves were and about how well the local kids ride that thing!
The trip was reallll fun. I learned about the best show in the world called Panico I think haha. But we actually caught Sununga pretty fun. Hantaro and Matheus we're killing it and Leandro, Renato, and all the other locals were pulling into some pretty sick barrels. I haven't seen Hayward's footage of the place yet but from what I hear he got some quality shots so I can't wait to see it. Wyatt: Crescer em Laguna é muito irado, você tem tudo o que você precisa para skiar, as praias são as melhores do mundo. Em termos de skimboard, foi aonde tudo começou. Então é muito manero mesmo!
3)Aqui no Brasil nós temos um grupo de skimmers de 15 anos que skia qualquer coisa. Pode estar chovendo, ventando e quase flat que eles vão estar na praia. Você skia qualquer coisa também?
Wyatt: Na verdade não. Eu só costumo skiar quando esta bom. Nos campeonatos que eu acabo skiando qualquer coisa. Mas, existem algumas vezes que eu skio qualquer coisa.
4)Fale um pouco sobre como é uma session típica para você. Onde você costuma skiar e com quem você skia?
Wyatt: Um dia típico para mim seria ir para Anita St. (Anita é uma das ruas de Laguna que terminam na praia e que eles usam como referência para dizer aonde na praia eles estão. Fica a uns 5km de West St. e é a rua seguinte de Thalia St.) ficar de bobeira com os meus amigos. Se a galera que skia comigo, tipo o Matt O'Brien, Dane Zarinelli e Blair Conklin acham que está melhor em lugares como Thalia, Aliso, West, Tortuava, 9th/10th, provavelmente nós vamos chegar por lá.
5) Como é fazer uma session com os pros quando o mar esta realmente bom?
Wyatt: Fazer uma session com os pros é bem manero, principalmente quando esta bom porque você pode assistir as manobras mais loucas. É como estar em um filme de skim.
6)Vamos falar um pouco sobre pranchas... Que prancha que você está usando no momento?
Wyatt: Eu estou usando uma Exile de carbono... é um pro model Small de 3/4"...
7)Quais são os seus planos para o futuro? Você pretende terminar a escola e ficar em Laguna durante a faculdade para skiar o máximo possível?
Wyatt: Eu pretendo terminar o colégio e se tudo der certo ir para UC Santa Cruz e pegar altas ondas por lá. Eu não tenho nenhuma trip planejada no momento. Mas, eu espero poder ir para a costa leste visitar o Perry Pruitt.

Wyatt: Eu não sou lá muito fã de campeonatos. A menos que eu mande bem! O Green Eggs foi um campeonato bem legal, eu cheguei até as semifinais, eu achei bem legal. Mas, dois campeonatos que eu realmente me orgulho foi ficar em terceiro no 3 Arch Bay Contest e meu terceiro lugar no Victoria World Championships. Eu fiquei realmente empolgado com o World Champs.

Wyatt: the typical day for me would be just heading down to Anita (fica a uns 5km de west st e é a seguinte depois de thalia) just to chill with all of my friends and if my friends that i skim with like Matt O'Brien, Dane Zarinelli and Blair Conklin think it might be good anywhere like Thalia, Aliso, West, Tortuava, 9th/10th, we'll probably just head down there.
5)how crazy it is to have a session with all the pros on firing conditions?!
Wyatt: to have a session with pros is pretty sick especially on epic conditions because you get to watch the sickest tricks that they pull and its just like a skim movie.
6)let's talk a bit about boards... What board are u riding at the moment?
Wyatt: im riding a carbon fiber exile pro model small with 3/4 rails
7)what are ur plans for the future?! Finishing high school and staying at Lagunaa for College and skim as much as possible through it?
Wyatt: i just plan on finishing highschool and hopefully making it into UC Santa Cruz for the super sick waves. no i dont have any trips planned but i hope i can go to the east coast and visit Perry Pruitt.
8)Is there any particular rider or maybe a video part that u look up to?
Wyatt: i especially look up to Paulo Prietto and Brad Domke. they kill it so hard. i also look up to Brandon Sears, Woody Harris, Brandon Rothe, Steve Taylor, Brenden Stevens and Tommy D'Eliscu.
9)let's talk a bit about contests. We don't get to see much the results of the AMs contests over here. But we saw u got 6th on the Green Eggs. How do u feel about contests?! Is that any particular result that u feel really proud of?! talk us through.
Wyatt: im not a big fan of contests unless i do well. but yea the green eggs was a sick contest, i made the semis and that was fine with me. but two contests i was stoked with my placing was the 3 Arch Bay contest, which i got 3rd in, and the Victoria World Championchips, and i got 3rd in that. i was pretty amped on the World Champs.

1) Para começar, fale um pouco sobre como você começou a skiar e como era a cena do skimboard na Carolina do Norte...
Woody: Eu começei a skiar em uma Zap rosa pequena com o meu melhor amigo Cheyene quando a gente tinha uns 10 anos. Nós dois nos apaixonamos pelo esporte e skiamos todo dia quando eramos crianças. Sempre um motivando o outro para sermos melhores skimmers.
2) Você conseguiu um patrocinio da Exile e depois foi capa da Foreverskim. Como que foi isso? Foi nessa época que você resolveu se mudar para a Califórnia ou você iria se mudar de qualquer jeito?

Woody: Aquela foto, na verdade, foi em um dia pequeno durante o verão. Quando esta pequeno daquele jeito você não precisa se preocupar muito em ficar preso no outside. Mas, quando esta realmente grande, as vezes, você tem que ficar nadando durante uma série de 15 ondas e nadar muito para salvar a sua vida.
4)Você morou em NC e agora mora em Laguna. Você poderia nos falar um pouco sobre como é a cena do skimboard em Laguna? E como compara com a cena em NC?
Woody: A cena de skimboard em Laguna é incrível, tem muitos skimmers bons por aqui, você aprende muito só de olhar, é bem mais fácil de progredir aqui. Por outro lado, quando eu estava crescendo em NC existiam apenas alguns skimmers, então, demorou mais para eu aprender manobras e técnicas. Agora, existem muitos skimmer em NC, e alguns deles são realmente muito bons. A cena realmente explodiu por lá.
5) Conte um pouco sobre como que foi skiar com os pros depois de se mudar para Laguna...
Woody: Quando eu me mudei para cá, eu tinha que esperar uma longa fila de skimmers para pegar uma lateral boa, você precisa ganhar respeito do pros para poder pegar ondas. Você precisa mostrar que você vai mandar bem na onda e não cair e jogar a onda fora. Uma vez que você mostra que você manda bem, você não tem problemas para pegar ondas.
6) Agora, vamos falar um pouco sobre pranchas. Que prancha que você está usando no momento?
Woody: Esse último ano eu estava skiando com uma pro shape texturizada pequena, é uma ótima prancha e eu tenho problemas para skiar qualquer outra coisa, mas, e estou pensando em trocar para uma medium/small para eu não precisar me matar para chegar em ondas mais longe. Eu não sinto muita diferença em termos de controle de uma medium/small para um small.
7) Você pode falar um pouco dos seus projetos para o futuro. e porque você não faz mais o Woody Video Corner na Foreverskim?
Woody: Eu comecei a fazer o video corner quando eu estava sem trabalhar e sem estar indo para aula. Eu estava realmente entediado e fiz o primeiro. Como as pessoas gostaram eu resolvi fazer mais. Mas, quando eu comecei a estudar eu não tinha mais tempo para filmar e editar vídeos, quem sabe eu volte a fazer um dia.
8) Agora, a pergunta clássica. Quando você vem para o Brasil?
Woody: Eu realmente gostaria de ir para o Brazil, mas, infelizmente para mim, eu não tenho dinheiro para isso. Eu vou aparecer por aí quando alguém resolver pagar para mim! (risos)

I started skimming on a small pink zap with my best friend Cheyene when we were around 10. We both fell in love with it and skimmed everyday in our youth and pushed each other to be better skimboarders.
2) you got sponsored by exile and then got on the cover of foreverskim mag. How was that?! Did u decide to move to California then or were u going to move anyway...
Both of those were amazing accomplishments in my skimboarding career. Before then i was a no body and no one knew who i was. I had always had the idea of moving to California in my mind but it wasn't until I had made at least 5 trips here before I really decided i was going to move here.
3) On this last foreverskim issue u have an exile ad on a gnarly wave at the wedge?! tell us a bit about riding that wave... getting used to those close outs... we've heard that if u don't make the connection, u have to swim for ages in the outside until u manage to get out...
That wave in the ad was actually during a really small swell this summer. When it's small like that you dont really have to worry about getting stuck outside and being held under by waves, but when its big and pumping somtimes you will have to sit outside during a 15 wave set and swim for your life

4) u lived in NC and now lives in Laguna... could tell us a bit hows the skimboard scene in Laguna... how is it compare to NC?!
The skimboarding scene in Laguna is incredible, there are so many great riders here, you learn from watching everyone else, it's really easy to progress here. On the other hand when i was growing up in NC there were only a few guys that skimboarded, so it took me longer to figure out new tricks and techniques. Now there are tons of kids who skimboard in NC and a handful of them are really good . The scene there has really blown up.
5) tell us a bit about how it was to skim with all the pros when u first moved to Laguna...
When I first moved here I had to wait in a long line of riders to get a decent sider, you have to earn respect from the top guys in order to get a lot of waves. You have to show them that you are going to rip this wave and not blow it. Once you show that you can rip, you won't have a problem getting waves.
6) Now, let's talk about boards for a bit... what have u been riding at the moment?!
For the past year I've been riding a small textured pro shape, it's a great board, I have trouble skimming on anything else, but I'm thinking about changing it up a bit and riding a ms so I don't have to try as hard to reach far out waves, also I don't notice much of a difference in control on a medium small compared to a small.
7) could u talk a bit about ur future projects... and why u don't make the woody video corner for foreverskim anymore...
I started making the video corner when I was living here with no job and I wasn't going to school. It was out of pure boredom that I made the first one and then since it was a hit i decided to keep it going. Once I started school I didn't have enough time to edit/film the videos, but I might make a return in an up coming issue you never know.
8) now... the classic question... when are u coming to Brazil?!
I really want to visit there but unfortunately for me, I do not enough money to travel there. I will show up when someone will pay for me haha.

na Macumba. O mar estava bem divertido, estavam rolando ondas
primárias na beira e não as tradicionais ondas secundárias. O mar e
a luz estavam bem melhor para goofy, foi bem engraçado ver o
Hantaro revoltado que não rolavam ondas para ele... Ele acabou
achando algumas, mas, o Caco e o Matheus acharam várias e fizeram a
cabeça...

ano.
1) para começar, conte um pouco sobre como você começou a skiar...
Brickle: Eu comecei a skiar em 1999. Eu e meu pai fomos para Avalon Pier uma tarde. Eu nunca tinha skiado, mas, na praia estavam Bernie Mcgrew, Cliff Cartwright e alguns dos amigos deles skiando. Eu fiquei olhando por um tempo e depois comecei a tentar skiar na minha prancha de bodyboard. Eles acabaram deixando eu usar uma prancha de skimboard. Alguns dias depois eu comprei a minha primeira Victoria. Desde então eu venho participando da maioria dos eventos do SkimUSA.
2) Parece que você se divertem muito skiando na Carolina do Norte. Conte um pouco de como é a cena por aí...
Brickle: A cena em OBX é relativamente pequena, mas, cresceu bastante nos últimos anos. Hayman Street é cheio de crianças skiando durante o verão. O que é meio chato, mas, bom para o esporte.
3)Parece que vocês sempre tem bons riders aparecendo... Woody, Corey Hanks, você... A que você atribui tantos bons skimmers?
Brickle: Eu diria que a principal razão é que nós não temos muito o que fazer por aqui. Durante o verão, para mim, todo dia é dia de ficar horas na praia. Outra razão eu diria que é porque quando o mar está bom, principalmente durante a época de furacões, durante o verão nos temos muitos dias flat, todo mundo se liga e skia junto. Penso que isso motiva todo mundo a evoluir.
4) Há um tempo atrás nos tivemos 2 skimmer de NC aqui no Brazil. Chris West e Kyle Holt, eles também são skimmers muito bons! O Corey Hanks está sempre na California e o Woody se mudou para lá. Parece que os skimmers da Carolina do Norte gostam de viajar. Você tem alguma trip planejada?
Brickle: é! Eu participo de campeonatos com o Chris e com o Kyle há bastante tempo. Eu acho que eu vi algumas imagens dessa trip que eles fizeram para o Brasil em um vídeo chamado Magic Carpet Ride. Falando de trips, eu vou passar um tempo na California durante o Octoberfest. Eu estou realmente empolgado porque eu nunca competi nesse evento. Esse ano é difícil para mim. Eu não posso viajar para muitos lugares porque eu tive que trabalhar a noite durante todo o verão para ganhar algum dinheiro para pagar a faculdade, que na verdade é a 2 horas da praia. Então, tem sido complicado, mas, eu tenho que ir para aula né...
5) Você foi uma surpresa no campeonato de Delaware e depois mandou muito bem no evento de OBX também. Mesmo não participando de 3 eventos da UST você está em 10º no ranking. O que você diria que é necessário para mandar bem em um evento da UST?
Brickle: Eu penso que sempre depende das ondas. Quando as ondas estão pequenas e ruins, eu penso que qualquer um pode ganhar. Mas, quando as ondas estão boas, você pode realmente mostrar as suas habilidades ao invés de só mandar shove its e tech tricks. Eu tento pensar em campeonatos desse jeito: o objetivo é entrar na bateria e passar para a próxima e skiar o melhor que você puder.
6) Ainda sobre a UST. Você pretende participar do tour inteiro ano que vem?!
Brickle: Eu gostaria, mas, provavelmente, o meu trabalho e a faculdade vão interferir. Eu quero participar de todos os campeonatos na California ano que vem e depois de ver as imagens do evento de Vilano eu realmente gostaria de ir para lá. Seria muito bom se eu conseguisse participar do tour inteiro.
7)Qual skimmer você admirava quando você era menor? e quem você acha que é o melhor skimmer no momento?
Brickle: Quando eu era menor eu me inspirava bastante no Bill Bryan. E não era só porque quando eu era menor eu parecia ser filho dele! (risadas) Eu não acho que eu poderia dizer quem é o melhor skimmer no momento. Todo mundo esta mandando muito bem! É difícil escolher um só.

Brickle: No momento eu estou usando uma Medium/Small Poly Carbon que eu gosto bastante. Tem um shape diferente da maioria das pranchas que eu já usei. Tem pouquissimo rocker para pegar mais velocidade e um tail bastante estreito. Eu adoro. O Matt da Victoria realmente sabe o que ele está fazendo.

The scene on the obx is relativly small, but it has grown alot in a few years. Hayman street all summer is fulll of kids skimboarding all the way down the beach now. which sucks, but i guess good for the sport.
3) it seems like u guys always have some good stuff going on... woody, corey hanks, you... What you say is the reason for so many good riders?!
Id say the main reason is just because there is not much else to do around here. Everyday for me in the summer is going to the beach and staying there for hours. another reason is because there is not constant swells during the summer. long flat spells. Hurricane season is when it really fires. Because we live in such a small place everyone usually calls everyone where its good, so skimming together i guess pushes all of us.
4)A while back we have had 2 skimmer from NC here in Brazil... Chris West and Kyle Holt... they were also very good riders... maybe u know them or have heard about them.. Corey hanks went to California and woody moved there... it seems like the skimmers from NC like to travel... do u have any trips planned?!
yea, iv been doing contest with chris and kyle for a longgg time, i remeber seeing some of that footage in their movie "magic carpet ride" i thinkk?? As far as trips coming up, Ill be going out to Cali for a bit to do the Octoberfest contest, which im stoked to compete in cause iv never been to that contest. Its been hard for me to travel to alot of places this year because all summer i worked at night to save for school, which is 2 hours inland. so its been tough but i gotta get that ed-u-ma-cation.
5) you were a huge suprise at the Delaware contest and then did really well at OBX too... even though you missed 3 contest this season you are in 10th in the UST Rankings... What would you say it takes to do well in a UST event?
For me i think its all about the conditions of the waves. when its sloppy small waves, i think anyone could win the contest. but when there are waves u get to actually show ur ability to ride waves and not just do shuv its or all tech stuff. I try to think of contest as just getting out of the heat and making it to the next one, and just skimming hard.
6) still about the UST... Do you plan on doing the entire tour next year?
i really would like to, but more than likly work and school with interfer with that. i wanna do all the cali contest next year. and after seeing the vilano footy from that contest i for sure wanna check that place out. but yea it would be sick if i could make it to all of them.
7) who did u look up to in the skimboarding world growing up and who do u think is the best rider at the moment?
growin up i looked up to beak dawg, and not just because when i was younger i looked freakishly like his long lost son or somthing, hahah. I dont think i could even try to say who i think is the best skimboarder right now. everyone just ripps to hard to put my finger on just one person.
8) lets finish this off by talk a bit about boards... what board(s) are you riding at the moment?!
right now i gotta MS poly carbon that i reallly like, its a differnt shape than alot of the other boards iv had. it hardly has any rocker at all for speed, and a farly narrow tail. i love it. Matt @ Vic really has his shit on point.

I started skimming in 1999. me and my pops went down to avalon pier one afternoon. id never seen skimboarding before and down the beach, Bernie Mcgrew, Cliff Cartwright, and some of their friends were all skimming. i watched for a bit and started running and skimming on my bodyboard. They let me use one of their board when they saw me, and i bough my first Vic a few days later. Iv been doing most of the skim usa events every year since.
2) it seems that you guys have a lot of fun skimming in NC... tell us a bit about the skimboard scene over there...
The scene on the obx is relativly small, but it has grown alot in a few years. Hayman street all summer is fulll of kids skimboarding all the way down the beach now. which sucks, but i guess good for the sport.
3) it seems like u guys always have some good stuff going on... woody, corey hanks, you... What you say is the reason for so many good riders?!
Id say the main reason is just because there is not much else to do around here. Everyday for me in the summer is going to the beach and staying there for hours. another reason is because there is not constant swells during the summer. long flat spells. Hurricane season is when it really fires. Because we live in such a small place everyone usually calls everyone where its good, so skimming together i guess pushes all of us.
4)A while back we have had 2 skimmer from NC here in Brazil... Chris West and Kyle Holt... they were also very good riders... maybe u know them or have heard about them.. Corey hanks went to California and woody moved there... it seems like the skimmers from NC like to travel... do u have any trips planned?!
yea, iv been doing contest with chris and kyle for a longgg time, i remeber seeing some of that footage in their movie "magic carpet ride" i thinkk?? As far as trips coming up, Ill be going out to Cali for a bit to do the Octoberfest contest, which im stoked to compete in cause iv never been to that contest. Its been hard for me to travel to alot of places this year because all summer i worked at night to save for school, which is 2 hours inland. so its been tough but i gotta get that ed-u-ma-cation.
5) you were a huge suprise at the Delaware contest and then did really well at OBX too... even though you missed 3 contest this season you are in 10th in the UST Rankings... What would you say it takes to do well in a UST event?
For me i think its all about the conditions of the waves. when its sloppy small waves, i think anyone could win the contest. but when there are waves u get to actually show ur ability to ride waves and not just do shuv its or all tech stuff. I try to think of contest as just getting out of the heat and making it to the next one, and just skimming hard.
6) still about the UST... Do you plan on doing the entire tour next year?
i really would like to, but more than likly work and school with interfer with that. i wanna do all the cali contest next year. and after seeing the vilano footy from that contest i for sure wanna check that place out. but yea it would be sick if i could make it to all of them.
7) who did u look up to in the skimboarding world growing up and who do u think is the best rider at the moment?
growin up i looked up to beak dawg, and not just because when i was younger i looked freakishly like his long lost son or somthing, hahah. I dont think i could even try to say who i think is the best skimboarder right now. everyone just ripps to hard to put my finger on just one person.
8) lets finish this off by talk a bit about boards... what board(s) are you riding at the moment?!
right now i gotta MS poly carbon that i reallly like, its a differnt shape than alot of the other boards iv had. it hardly has any rocker at all for speed, and a farly narrow tail. i love it. Matt @ Vic really has his shit on point.
